European Capital of Culture listens to jazz

Wroclaw is celebrating the title of the European Capital of Culture, and the plan of attractions for this year keeps growing. We are about to enjoy countless concerts and meetings with stars. And the 30 April is the International Jazz Day - it is a good idea to celebrate it in the Lower Silesia as artists have prepared jazz surprises.

All amateurs of jazz are impatiently waiting for the last day of April. And those who are just getting familiar with this type of music are about to reach another level of initiation. So if you think that the only attraction to see is the concert of the stars, we are about to surprise you: there are a few jazz events in a single day. On 30 April, Wroclaw is the most musical city in Europe.

Jazz Parade

All the celebrations start at 12:00 with the Jazz Parade from Rynek to Pergola. Special concerts of the following big bands take place there:
·         Funky New Orleans Big Band of the University of Zielona Gora, leader Jerzy Szymaniuk, soloists: Andrzej Dąbrowski, Krzysztof Kiljański, Paulina Gołębiowska
·         Bartosz Pernal Orchestra, soloists: Jacqui  Dankworth, Janusz Szrom

Jazz nad Odrą [Jazz by Odra] - Gala Concert

Evening is the time for concerts of the famous festival Jazz nad Odrą - in Hala Stulecia. It’s the 52nd edition of that event! It lasts from 26 to 30 April. The festival closes on the International Day of Jazz. At 6 p.m., the special gala concert commences where among all the others, we can listen to: Milo Kurtis – Orkiestra Naxos, Yarosh Organ Trio, Janusz Brych & Free Electrons.

Celebrations in the National Forum of Music and Capitol Theatre

From 8 p.m., we can enjoy even more attractions. We can choose to participate in jazz events in the two most important musical locations in Wroclaw. The Capitol Musical Theatre shows the spectacle “Rat Pack, czyli Sinatra z kolagami” [Rat Pack or Sinatra and friends] which brings back the history of the famous trio of late 60’s and early 70’s. The trio included Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Junior and Dean Martin. The show is an amazing opportunity to listen to the greatest hits of Rat Pack. At the same time, National Forum of Music organizes “Jazz fever”. It’s a special concert where we can listen to:
·         Melting Pot  Lab. 9. - Grand Finale
·         Piotr Damasiewicz – Composition on 26 improvisers (premiere)
·         Vijay Iyer + NFM Leopoldinum (premiere)
At night, we can relax during the “Silent Disco” on Barbara Bar. It is also a good idea to check out some club concerts: in Melczarnia, Bułka z masłem, Kalambur, Literatka, Proza and Autograf.  For more information about the events, click here:  http://jazznadodra.pl/en/.
