Renting an apartment in a new city in a foreign country only seems to be scary - because YOU can do it. Before starting the apartment hunt, you should answer a few questions: what is your rent budget, which area do you want to live in, is the apartment standard more important than the location? The sooner you know the answers to these questions, the easier it will be to find the place which meets all your expectations.
 

Alone or with friends?

If you are looking for a housing together with friends, the number of options increase. If you are capable of establishing common criteria for what you are looking for, living together is the best idea. Larger budget will enable you to find something really unique with better standard and in better locations. You should also remember that renting period is very important for the property owners - if it is longer than one year, you have a really good negotiation argument in your hand. You can really benefit a lot form that!

You should also be aware of the fact that the majority of property owners do not agree to rent their apartments for the period of time shorter than 6 months or 1 year.
 

With or without the assistance of a Real Estate Agent?

At the first glance it may seem that the assistance of a Real Estate Agent is only an unnecessary expense you can skip. But such an assistance is actually a huge facilitation and time-saving. It gives you a lot of comfort if you are looking for an apartment on your own. If you turn to an agency, you can be sure that all formalities are correctly completed and the property is checked. Good advice as for location, apartment standard, and all the tips on the types and amount of payments are always welcomed - especially at the beginning of your hunt. If the negotiations are lead professionally, the owners may decide to lower their financial expectations, so you can save on rent. And maybe the Agent will be able to persuade the owner to rent the apartment only for one semester, even if he insisted on the full year before.

It does not matter if you are looking for an apartment on your own or you are using the offer of a Real Estate Agency, just remember to make sure that you know what your perfect housing should be like and where it should be located.
